Denial code OA-23
What does Denial code OA-23 mean on a medical bill?
OA-23 shows up when more than one plan is involved: it carries over what the first plan already did so the second plan can pick up from there. OA is the other adjustment group, so on an EOB from a secondary plan this is bookkeeping rather than a refusal: the amount attached to it was already handled upstream. It is still worth checking, since a secondary plan that never received the first plan's decision will process the claim as though more of it belongs to you.
What should I watch out for with Denial code OA-23?
- Ask the billing office whether the primary plan's EOB was actually sent on to the secondary plan
- Line up both EOBs for the same date and check that the amounts carry over correctly
- Ask the secondary plan to reprocess the claim when its numbers do not match the primary plan's decision
