Date of service
What does Date of service mean on a medical bill?
The date of service is the day care actually happened, which is not the day the bill was printed and not the day the claim was filed. It decides which plan year the claim lands in, which deductible it touches, and whether the provider was in your network at the time. Overnight stays and visits that cross midnight get split across two dates, which is normal. A date you were never there is not, and it is worth resolving before anything else on the bill.
What should I watch out for with Date of service?
- A date of service when you were not there — ask for the record that supports the charge
- A visit crossing midnight billed across two dates — ask which services fall on each
- Compare the date on the bill against the date on the EOB before paying
